Tree Planting Cost-Share Assistance

There are several type of assistance available.  Forest Management Services can help you determine which is best for your situation.

  • Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) -- federal program which offers cost-share for planting trees on highly erodible crop land plus an annual payment for 15 years.
  • Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) -- focuses more on wetland and/or flood prone crop land; the government buys a permanent lease.
  • Forestry Development Act (FDA) -- for Illinois residents only--cost-sharing is provided not only for planting and seedlings, but for herbicide applications as well.  It is funded through a 4% tax on the sale of timber in Illinois.
  • Stewardship Incentive Program (SIP) -- federal program in which owners are eligible for a one-time payment on planting.  For small areas and those not classified as highly erodible farm land.  This program is administered through the state Department of Natural Resources.
  • Other incentives -- reduction of property taxes on established tree plantations, tax credit of 10% on non-cost-shared portion, and income tax deduction of non-cost-shared portion.

We are aware of these programs and work directly with them.  We can assist you in creating a new planting that will keep the initial investment low.
